New Tosh.0 Tonight on Comedy Central

I’m a fan of both internet video-based television shows Tosh.0 and Web Soup, but let’s face it, the edge goes to Daniel Tosh because of his personality and the “Web Redemption” segments. That’s right, Daniel, I called you ugly. The web redemption is cool because he goes and meets the people who make the viral video moments we cherish so dearly and squeezes a few more jokes out of them. New episodes begin tonight, Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 at 10:30 EST on Comedy Central. To celebrate tonight’s new episode I present a video of a bit I saw on his show called “fire in the hole!”

A Video Game Where You Can Beat Up Jesus? Hilariously Blasphemous!

by NONPOPULIST / / / / / / / Comments

The video game You Testament was featured on G4 television’s program Web Soup recently, and the first impression I got when watching it was, “Huh, that looks like an old wrestling game I use to play.” Wait a minute, what do wrestling and Jesus have in common that they should both have the same video game engine? A fair question, right? The answer is nothing, really, except in the mind of Mat Dickie. He created the game of confusing religious tenets where you can beat up Jesus and do other stuff too. What else matters after being able to attack Jesus, though? The concept of the whole video game and Chris Hardwick making fun of it are funny, but what made the whole thing even funnier is a review I found of the game on a Christian video game website. Here’s a few highlights:

“I had to test attacking Jesus as part of my job as a reviewer.
I am
so sorry, Jesus! Please forgive me!

Early in the game I was holding a metal spike and I was going to hug Jesus but I pressed the wrong button and poked the spike in His face! His face remained scarred and His eyes were all bloody for most of the game after that. Why would it let me do this horrible thing?

“Even though I stabbed Him in the face with a spike, Jesus still forgave me!
This part of the game is a very accurate Jesus simulation.”

ss-you_testament_attacking_jesus

There were also weird quotes on the loading screens from people like Confucius, Buddha, Mohammed, Osama Bin Ladin, Barack Obama, Bruce Lee, Kanye West, and Jay-Z. Those made no sense in a Biblical game at all. It’s like some sort of mashup of Christianity with all sorts of false religions. I think Mat Dickie, the game’s sole creator, is a very confused person. At least I hope it is confusion and not intentional deception.

I would give this game five crosses for the way it lets you live through the Bible and witness Jesus first-hand, but I must subtract crosses for being able to beat up Jesus and getting Jesus’ teachings mixed up with things like Hinduism and the Matrix.”

The review is full of unwitting gems such as that one. And yes, I realize I am going to hell for this. If you would like to do blasphemous things you can download the game for free here, but you can only play it three times apparently.

SNL Exits Season 35 with a Whimper

by NONPOPULIST / / / / / / Comments

*Whimpering noise* The season finale of Saturday Night Live was this past Saturday, May 15th, with Alec Baldwin. One can gauge how important this event was based on the breakneck speed at which I assembled this post. And you’ll notice that I do not have a picture of Alec Baldwin at the top of this post even though he hosted the finale. I figured my conservative overlords from The New Ledger would not appreciate a picture of a noted liberal on their blog so I chose Abby Elliott, a smart, funny, and pretty girl instead. Who cares what her politics are? She’s a dame, am I right?
SNL made a liar out of me this season. Having come back to the show as a regular DVRer for the past three seasons I predicted to my wife that this season would play out like the other two previous seasons: slow start, with a good finish. This season, the 35th season of the show, got the slow start part correct, but somewhere they forgot to pick up the pace. Look, I don’t like being a hater, but this show has got to get more consistent if it wants to stay on the air and more importantly if it wants to keep me entertained. There were some bright spots this season. I laughed quite a bit, but there some episodes where they just needed to rewind back to the beginning of the week and start over again. I thought this bit by Bill Hader during weekend update was funny. He’s done it once or twice before. Hader is one of my favorite cast members because of his ability with impressions. I’m a bit of an amateur impressionist myself. You have to have a good ear to be a good impressionist. For instance, the character Hader does in this sketch, Stefon, is a notch or two away from his dead-on John Malkovich impression. See, I told you, the ear…

The NFL Throwing TV Elbows

by NONPOPULIST / / / / Comments

Is the NFL a television juggernaut or what? NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said ratings are up 30% from last year’s draft. Thursday night was the first ever NFL draft in prime time, and the major networks will have to take notice when the official ratings come out. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports the league is declaring last night’s first round a success and speculates the draft in prime time will most likely become a yearly tradition. Next year I am predicting there will be a lot of reruns aired against the draft if the networks are smart… which they aren’t.

Handy Guide to Television Season Finales

by NONPOPULIST / / / Comments

Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly has an index of all the major broadcast network show’s season finales coming up soon. I thought this was extremely handy and thought I should share it with you. Wait, I said major networks, but he included the CW. Disregard the CW. Among the highlights is the May 24th 24 finale which will be a 2-hour series finale as well.

How Crazy Is Tracy Morgan?

Crazy awesome. Tracy Morgan went on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night to promote his new movie Death at a Funeral which is a remake of a British movie by the same name that I also did not and will not see. About the only time worth tuning into The Daily Show is when they have a good guest like Tracy Morgan on the program for a few reasons. One reason is Jon Stewart is mean-spirited. He makes some good points, but the way he presents himself is annoying, at best. I mean, The Daily Show is still supposed to be a comedy program, right? Try not to be as smarmy as Rachel Maddow or as douchey as Bill O’Reilly, Jon. The supporting cast on The Daily Show almost redeems Jon Stewart’s persona but not quite. Another reason I don’t watch the show with any regularity is if I put in a little bit of effort I can predict how Stewart will cover any story. Here is the basis of any political story they cover. Republicans are dumb and Democrats are smart. Again, I can watch another show like Countdown with Keith Olbermann if I want that kind of premise. The last reason I don’t like The Daily Show is the most speculative but also the most damning if it is true. Watching the show I always get the sense that Jon Stewart would be nothing without his writers. Let me elaborate. I realize writers are an integral part of any scripted television series, but I wonder if Jon Stewart doesn’t depend on what his writers say more than the average television personality. Take for instance Conan O’Brien or Stephen Colbert. They both rely on their writers, but their individual personalities take over anything that is written for them. Jon Stewart doesn’t strike me the same way. I’ll quit beating around the bush. Jon Stewart is the Alex Trebek of comedy hosts. He wouldn’t be as smart or have the political insights he has without his cards and writers. You can tell he goes off book once in a while when the points in his rants seem a little infantile and ill-informed. He dependence on his writers reminds me of the person he is rumored to be the heir to, David Letterman. Letterman is so unfunny, though, his writers do not have a chance to make him look better.
Now to the funny, Tracy Morgan is a funny quote robot, just stick some booze in his slot and watch the funny come out. Actually, I think he still has that ankle bracelet that detects if any alcohol breathes out of his pores so he’s probably sober, but he still kills it on 30 Rock and any interview he does. Among the highlights from last night’s Daily Show interview.

The keyboard dude is the sexiest.” (in reference to the amount of play people in bands get)
“See, coming on this show, man,  you gotta have a GED.” (in reference to Jon’s use of the word scuttlebutt)
Tracy Morgan has never seen any of the Spiderman movies because Tobey Maguire owes him $75 that has not been repaid.
Tracy alleges that Elin Nordegren knew about Tiger Woods’ affairs on the basis golf is just an excuse to get out of the house and away from your wife. Good point.

The video above has some other funny moments, but I’ll let you watch it for yourself.

Onion Sports Coming to Comedy Central

by NONPOPULIST / / / / / / Comments

onion_logoThe Onion is continuing its foray into television with the announcement that Comedy Central has ordered 10 episodes of a scripted series built around Onion Sports. This news comes on the heels of IFC’s announcement they will air a show called Onion News Network in early 2011. Honestly I don’t know why this hasn’t happened sooner. Sure, The Onion went through a lull period a few years ago where it wasn’t completely hilarious. I don’t remember exactly when that was because I may or may not have been using controlled substances at the time, but the site has been funny for the past few years that I can remember. Looking at the bigger picture, The Onion moving to the small screen along with the success of shows such as Tosh.0 and WebSoup signal that some of the folks that handle programming for television are starting to realize there is good content online. I stop short of saying television executives are waking up because we are not talking about the big four networks and let’s face it, there is a lot of boring, unfunny crap on the internet also. In fact, you’re looking at evidence of that right now.

The Good Guys Might Be Serviceable

by NONPOPULIST / / / Comments

goodguys

The Good Guys is a show coming to Fox this summer from Burn Notice creator and showrunner Matt Nix. The show is described as an action-comedy and stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks. The show will have a special preview on May 19th at 8PM EST and then begin airing regularly on June 7th at 9PM EST. Fox has already begun airing promos for the show, and I am hopeful this will be worth watching. It looks like it has solid potential and given how much I like Burn Notice I will give anything Nix does a chance. Hey, it’s not on NBC so it has a leg up already. It took me a while to get into Burn Notice, but now I really like the show. I should have known anything that involves Bruce Campbell has probably got some redeeming value. My initial problem with watching Burn Notice was the simple fact that it was on USA. There was a stigma attached to watching an original show on a cable network that I have slowly gotten over network by network. Here’s hoping The Good Guys is a successful transition for Matt Nix from cable to broadcast network television.

Concerned With Facebook Privacy?

There are tools to help if you are concerned with Facebook privacy. And if you were unsure you should be concerned with your privacy on Facebook. The CNN SciTechBlog highlights four of them. Why can’t Google and Facebook chill out a little and not be so concerned with knowing every detail about us in order to monetize every penny they can. Clam down, guys,  we just want to use the damn internet. If we want to buy something we’ll let you know.

Zombie Awareness Month?

So we can just make up awareness months now? The Zombie Research Society has dubbed May ‘Zombie Awareness Month,’ and it doesn’t appear to be a joke, maybe. You are encouraged to wear a gray ribbon to signify your awareness of zombies for the month of May. This can not be real. On their website they offer a lifetime membership in the society for $25. This is ingeniously crazy. I totally just liked the ZRS on FB.
