New Jonah Hex Trailer Featuring Dynamite Gun and Sweaty Megan Fox

by NONPOPULIST / / / / / / / Comments

jonah_hex_poster1

O, you better believe there will be explosions and Megan Fox looking hot and sweaty. The marketing people behind Jonah Hex know they have a long hill to climb after the early buzz has this movie billed as this year’s Snakes on a Plane, and they try to make up some ground with this trailer. I don’t know, the way I heard people talk about it last go around I thought it was a Syfy network movie. This trailer doesn’t look horrible. Would both Josh Brolin and John Malkovich both sign on to a bad movie? Wait, Righteous Kill, Pacino, De Niro, never mind. Does it bother anyone else that Brolin’s character has a chewing tobacco eaten away face like the coach character on The Cleveland Show? It’s so unnerving. I guess this movie is based on a graphic novel or something as if I care about that nerdy crap. I guess it’s better than being based on a novel by Sapphire, but only slightly. Also, a big plus showing plenty of shots of Megan Fox and her possibly riding someone. That’s a smooth move, guys, honestly. Ever since she has been fired/quit from the newest Transformers movie she has been seeming much more attractive to me. Weird. Here’s the newest trailer.

Selling in This Market Is a ‘Field of Dreams’

Field of Dreams was a great movie. Kevin Costner was good in that movie. That’s how I choose to remember him, as Field of Dream Costner, not For the Love of the Game Costner. *Time slows down and I become a better blogger. The rest of this post will be typed in slow motion.*

Damn, I can’t keep that up. But was at least that part better than usual? I was typing at a pretty high level there. Anyway, the owners of the house, Don and Becky Lansing, are ready to sell it off. They made a website solely for that purpose. View it here. I have to applaud them on the idea of making a website. Old people can get viral too apparently because this link is getting passed around like the last doobie at Woodstock. I think I just coined a phrase. /sploosh. The only problem is viral marketing is already beginning to show some cracks. The consuming public is beginning to see through these crazy youtube videos that end up being fake, and I see through the Lansing’s attempt. They are tired of being the owners of the Field of Dreams house and adjacent baseball field. The lady is tired of making lemonade for everyone who stops by to force a family moment by walking on the field and having a game of catch. People show up and probably expect the Lansing’s to have a Louisville Slugger, some balls, enough gloves for everyone, and fill out the field while the family bats around. They’re just getting too old for that mess. I don’t blame them. Good luck on trying to sell it, though.

Men in Black 3: The Squeaquel

by NONPOPULIST / / / / / Comments

Men in Black 3
is going to happen. Neuralize me now! Another sequel for which no one is clamoring will be relied upon to prop up a studio’s budget so they can continue to put out more sequels and squeaquels with unchecked aggression. And people will probably go see it since you know, we are all mindless sheeple. Yes, I used the word sheeple because it encapsulates what I mean so well. When are people going to realize that Hollywood will continue to take steaming dumps on movie screens as long as we allow them? Look, the first Men in Black was ok. I kind of liked it. I am a Tommy Lee Jones fan in most of his other work, and I thought the chemistry between he and Will Smith was good. I even laughed at some of the jokes. The scene where Smith takes the test with all of the other potential recruits was funny… “with honors.” See, I even remembered that line. But none of the good will earned in the first Men in Black movie was left after viewing less than half of the second movie. A third movie in the Men in Black franchise is completely unnecessary and proves again how dumb studio executives think we are. Also, if we start calling every crappy or unnecessary sequel a squeaquel it could potentially save some time and money.

A Profile on The Grandfather of Stop Motion, Ray Harryhausen

by NONPOPULIST / / / Comments

clash-of-the-titans
Ray Harryhousen may be one of the most influential filmmakers of all time. Not only was his work in movies like Mighty Joe Young (1949), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), and Clash of the Titans (1981) revolutionary, but it influenced the another generation of filmmakers, especially in the field of visual effects. According to a profile in The Telegraph UK Harryhousen influenced such movie makers as James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, and Tim Burton. His signature medium was stop-motion animation, and he cared so much about his art he used to make pieces in his own oven. One thing I learned for certain from this profile is special effects would not be where they are today without Mr. Harryhousen. The odd thing is he is underwhelmed by today’s special effects. Where would Robot Chicken be without this guy? Nowhere.

The Arrested Development Movie Appears to Be a Dream Denied

by NONPOPULIST / / / / / / Comments

Attention Arrested Development fans holding your breath for that long-rumored movie: You can quit holding your breath. It’s not going to happen. Whew, I don’t have enough tic tacs for all of you. David Cross told TV Squad in an interview, “Everyone’s doing their own thing, you know. And everybody’s aged. It’s just not going to happen.” That is a big let down  for AD fans, but the project hasn’t moved forward in so long that it was to be expected. No one wanted to kill the dream, but someone had to say it. Thanks for ripping off the band aid, David Cross.

Why Did No One Tell Me about ‘The Losers?’

by NONPOPULIST / / / / / Comments

Dear friends and internet, you have let me down by not giving me enough forewarning and hype concerning the movie The Losers. I had to find out about it by seeing a preview Saturday night at the movie theater. I hope you all are proud of yourselves. The movie looks kind of like a cross between Ocean’s Eleven and  Wanted with a little bit of A-Team thrown in there. Despite the comparisons I just made this movie looks like it will be cool. Idris Elba, aka Stringer Bell, is playing a main character as well as Zoe Saldana who is looking mighty fine. I’m not one of these people who starts drooling every time a comic book or graphic novel-inspired movie comes out, and I could be falling victim to the syndrome where any preview you see in the theater makes the movie look 50% better than it really is, but I think this movie will be entertaining. Notice I did not say it would be tragically awe-inspiring cinema. Jim Jarmusch and Werner Herzog can not make every movie that ever comes out. I am guessing The Losers will be worth a watch.

Ebert Reviving “At The Movies”

by MICHAEL TUNISON / / / / Comments

Not long after Disney put the kibosh on “At The Movies”, Roger Ebert is already hard at work putting together a revamped version of the signature movie review show that brought him to prominence. Details are still sparse, but it is known that Ebert would provide on on-air narration for segments of the show.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Fanboys

by MICHAEL TUNISON / / / Comments

Since I’ve been nerd-slobbering over Kick-Ass like it was clinging precariously to Olivia Munn’s nipple, it’s only fair that I shine the Edge spotlight on the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World trailer. Because otherwise you, dear reader, would be forced to turn to the thousands of other blogs embedding the video, not to mention the thousands of theaters showing the trailer prior to scheduled showtimes. I think it plays nicer here, for some reason.

There are obvious likenesses. They’re based on popular comic book series. They feature gawky adolescent males forced into violence. But whereas Kick-Ass gores the route of ultraviolence, Scott Pilgrim goes the hyperstylized cartoony route. One isn’t necessarily work better than the other, per se. Having read the Kick-Ass comic, I can vouch for how well its approach works with the narrative. I haven’t read Scott Pilgrim, so I can’t make that same claim. But people rave about it, so take that for what it’s worth.

People will complain that it’s got Michael Cera doing the Michael Cera thing once again. Pigeonholed though he may be, I still think he’s an above average comic actor, and him doing the awkward guy thing again won’t necessarily drive me away. As an aside: it’s good to see Anna Kendrick, who was really the only great thing about Up In The Air, in this, though hopefully her role is bigger than the trailer would indicate.

Concerned With Facebook Privacy?

There are tools to help if you are concerned with Facebook privacy. And if you were unsure you should be concerned with your privacy on Facebook. The CNN SciTechBlog highlights four of them. Why can’t Google and Facebook chill out a little and not be so concerned with knowing every detail about us in order to monetize every penny they can. Clam down, guys,  we just want to use the damn internet. If we want to buy something we’ll let you know.

Zombie Awareness Month?

So we can just make up awareness months now? The Zombie Research Society has dubbed May ‘Zombie Awareness Month,’ and it doesn’t appear to be a joke, maybe. You are encouraged to wear a gray ribbon to signify your awareness of zombies for the month of May. This can not be real. On their website they offer a lifetime membership in the society for $25. This is ingeniously crazy. I totally just liked the ZRS on FB.

The NFL Throwing TV Elbows

Is the NFL a television juggernaut or what? NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said ratings are up 30% from last year’s draft. Thursday night was the first ever NFL draft in prime time, and the major networks will have to take notice when the official ratings come out. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports the league is declaring last night’s first round a success and speculates the draft in prime time will most likely become a yearly tradition. Next year I am predicting there will be a lot of reruns aired against the draft if the networks are smart… which they aren’t.
