New Jonah Hex Trailer Featuring Dynamite Gun and Sweaty Megan Fox
by NONPOPULIST / comic books / Jonah Hex / Megan Fox / movie trailers / movies / teh sexy / Comments

O, you better believe there will be explosions and Megan Fox looking hot and sweaty. The marketing people behind Jonah Hex know they have a long hill to climb after the early buzz has this movie billed as this year’s Snakes on a Plane, and they try to make up some ground with this trailer. I don’t know, the way I heard people talk about it last go around I thought it was a Syfy network movie. This trailer doesn’t look horrible. Would both Josh Brolin and John Malkovich both sign on to a bad movie? Wait, Righteous Kill, Pacino, De Niro, never mind. Does it bother anyone else that Brolin’s character has a chewing tobacco eaten away face like the coach character on The Cleveland Show? It’s so unnerving. I guess this movie is based on a graphic novel or something as if I care about that nerdy crap. I guess it’s better than being based on a novel by Sapphire, but only slightly. Also, a big plus showing plenty of shots of Megan Fox and her possibly riding someone. That’s a smooth move, guys, honestly. Ever since she has been fired/quit from the newest Transformers movie she has been seeming much more attractive to me. Weird. Here’s the newest trailer.
RE: RE: Superman Vs. Batman

Some of my fellow New Ledgerians New Ledgericans New Ledgerites, yeh, let’s go with New Ledgerites have been nerdily debating who is the better superhero, Superman or Batman. Well, you know what they say, nerd up or shut up. No one says that. Let me bring a different perspective to this debate. After all my handle is Nonpopulist. My take will be much shorter than the lengthy dissertations seen here by Pejman Yousefzadeh and here by Ben Domenech. And as if that weren’t enough links in a row here is the original post that sparked the debate from Poetic Faith.
I have never been a comic book person. When I was kid we rode around on bikes, played basketball, and did a little graffiti if time allowed. I hardly even played video games because my parents would never let me get a game system. That being said I have seen every Batman movie and every Superman movie except the most recent one, and I have gleaned close to enough knowledge to be able to settle this debate once and for all. Superman is strong. He can really fly, not just glide. He is an alien that is super-human (better than humans.) Batman is a vigilante born of a personal tragedy and too much of a bankroll to finance his lack of psychosocial well being. Batman is like Kick Ass if it worked out (haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t ruin it for me, I just assume it can’t work out in the movie.) Bottom line: Batman would get served (as pictured above.) See, that didn’t take long.
Why Did No One Tell Me about ‘The Losers?’
by NONPOPULIST / Add new tag / comic books / movies / The Losers / Comments
Dear friends and internet, you have let me down by not giving me enough forewarning and hype concerning the movie The Losers. I had to find out about it by seeing a preview Saturday night at the movie theater. I hope you all are proud of yourselves. The movie looks kind of like a cross between Ocean’s Eleven and Wanted with a little bit of A-Team thrown in there. Despite the comparisons I just made this movie looks like it will be cool. Idris Elba, aka Stringer Bell, is playing a main character as well as Zoe Saldana who is looking mighty fine. I’m not one of these people who starts drooling every time a comic book or graphic novel-inspired movie comes out, and I could be falling victim to the syndrome where any preview you see in the theater makes the movie look 50% better than it really is, but I think this movie will be entertaining. Notice I did not say it would be tragically awe-inspiring cinema. Jim Jarmusch and Werner Herzog can not make every movie that ever comes out. I am guessing The Losers will be worth a watch.
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Fanboys
by MICHAEL TUNISON / comic books / movies / Comments
Since I’ve been nerd-slobbering over Kick-Ass like it was clinging precariously to Olivia Munn’s nipple, it’s only fair that I shine the Edge spotlight on the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World trailer. Because otherwise you, dear reader, would be forced to turn to the thousands of other blogs embedding the video, not to mention the thousands of theaters showing the trailer prior to scheduled showtimes. I think it plays nicer here, for some reason.
There are obvious likenesses. They’re based on popular comic book series. They feature gawky adolescent males forced into violence. But whereas Kick-Ass gores the route of ultraviolence, Scott Pilgrim goes the hyperstylized cartoony route. One isn’t necessarily work better than the other, per se. Having read the Kick-Ass comic, I can vouch for how well its approach works with the narrative. I haven’t read Scott Pilgrim, so I can’t make that same claim. But people rave about it, so take that for what it’s worth.
People will complain that it’s got Michael Cera doing the Michael Cera thing once again. Pigeonholed though he may be, I still think he’s an above average comic actor, and him doing the awkward guy thing again won’t necessarily drive me away. As an aside: it’s good to see Anna Kendrick, who was really the only great thing about Up In The Air, in this, though hopefully her role is bigger than the trailer would indicate.
Superman vs. Muhammah Ali: The Collectible
by MICHAEL TUNISON / comic books / Superman / Comments
A 10-inch plastic statue pitting Superman and Ali in a boxing match will be available Nov. 10 for the low, low price of $250. Now, this isn’t just a totally random juxtaposition. It’s actually based on an obscure comic book from the late ’70s. Of course, Batman is shown on the cover of the issue, but where is he here? I want to see Batman making some wagers. There used to be a little something called craftsmanship in this country.
Kids Hooked On Reading Four Color Crack
by MICHAEL TUNISON / comic books / geekdom / Comments
You have to love when an industry comes together to tell the world what a positive force it is. Usually such self-importance is the calling card of show business, but it looks as though comic books want to get in on the fun with “Comic Book Literacy”, a independent documentary that will premiere at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo in April. I’m sure it will go over like a lead balloon with that crowd.
And, sure, comics can help with those who are trying to build basic reading skills and anything that is effective to that end should be duly praised. But is the industry really doing itself a huge favor advancing the notion that comics are essentially kids fare or aimed at those with only rudimentary readings skills? But then there’s probably not a documentary out there that can dispel the stigma that the only people reading them are socially backwards freaks, so I suppose this is the best way to expand their audience while getting to feel good about themselves.
Let These People Make The “Walking Dead” Series
by MICHAEL TUNISON / comic books / TV / Walking Dead / Comments
I’ve already aired embarrassing amounts of nerd glee in response to AMC approving a series based on “The Walking Dead” comic book series, but this fan-made short further stokes my belief that the series could translate very well on the screen. Of course, it also concerns me that the TV series producers won’t be the tone or the look as spot-on as these fans did, but don’t mind me. I’m a worrier.
The short is a filmed adaptation of one of the more poignant moments in the series. However, as good as the film is, it contains a few fairly significant spoilers about the plot, so if that’s something you’d rather avoid, here’s your forewarning. Still, if you’re curious about getting into the series, it’ll give you a good idea of what to expect. That is, except for the complete absence of zombies in this segment.

When Captain America Divides America
by MICHAEL TUNISON / AMURRICA / comic books / Comments

Last week, Marvel Comics got itself into a decent size flap over a reference to the Tea Party movement in the new issue of Captain America. Basically, they were depicted as a band of crazy, racist deranged zealots, which is a summation many outsiders would not disagree with, but the Tea Party folks themselves found extremely offensive.
A “tea bag” reference in a recent Captain America comic book that has angered the Tea Party movement will be removed by Marvel Comics in future editions, the story’s writer told FoxNews.com.
In issue No. 602 of Captain America, “Two Americas, Part One,” the title hero and The Falcon, a black superhero from New York City, stumble upon a protest rally in Boise, Idaho. They see scores of protesters carrying signs that say “Stop the Socialists!” and “Tea Bag The Libs Before They Tea Bag YOU!”
Captain America says the protest appears to be an “anti-tax thing,” and The Falcon jokes that he likely would not be welcomed into the crowd of “angry white folks.”
I’m not really all that concerned about the fairness of the depiction or whether comic books should be touching upon hotbed topical issues. What irritates me is that Marvel put this reference in, likely knowing full well that it would piss some people off, only to cave to them once the group noticed and was offended. Not to mention that the Tea Party movement, which avers to be quite fond of the First Amendment, is calling for immediate censorship. It’s a two-way suckfest in which no one is sticking to their guns.

Concerned With Facebook Privacy?
There are tools to help if you are concerned with Facebook privacy. And if you were unsure you should be concerned with your privacy on Facebook. The CNN SciTechBlog highlights four of them. Why can’t Google and Facebook chill out a little and not be so concerned with knowing every detail about us in order to monetize every penny they can. Clam down, guys, we just want to use the damn internet. If we want to buy something we’ll let you know.
THREADZombie Awareness Month?
So we can just make up awareness months now? The Zombie Research Society has dubbed May ‘Zombie Awareness Month,’ and it doesn’t appear to be a joke, maybe. You are encouraged to wear a gray ribbon to signify your awareness of zombies for the month of May. This can not be real. On their website they offer a lifetime membership in the society for $25. This is ingeniously crazy. I totally just liked the ZRS on FB.
THREADThe NFL Throwing TV Elbows
Is the NFL a television juggernaut or what? NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said ratings are up 30% from last year’s draft. Thursday night was the first ever NFL draft in prime time, and the major networks will have to take notice when the official ratings come out. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports the league is declaring last night’s first round a success and speculates the draft in prime time will most likely become a yearly tradition. Next year I am predicting there will be a lot of reruns aired against the draft if the networks are smart… which they aren’t.
